Ready, Set, Go!!!

Well it all starts here today!!

A BOD?? A block of the day, but don’t panic you only have to cut a piece of fabric a day, not piece a block. :-)

I heard about ‘Calendar Quilts’ a few years ago & immediately had a picture in my mind of what they would look like. I went surfing & found they were nothing like I pictured so I started one the way I pictured it.

Well like a lot of things in my life, it all petered out after a few months. The following year I picked up where I left off & again failed. Not surprising as I was then thrown into the worst 18 months of my life, where everything ground to a halt. Now things back on track I feel I’m back in control & this year I’m going to make my calendar quilt. :-)

So enough of the waffling. Here’s the idea.  You need to cut a piece of fabric to represent every single day of the year. It pays to have a good stash of novelty/conversation prints to use, you also need to have a diary to document what each block represents & keep the diary to be passed on with the quilt. This means you might just write a comment each day then sit down once a week & cut 7 fabric for the previous 7 days. I wouldn’t recommend leaving it longer than 7 days because it all starts to feel a bit too hard to catch up. At the end of each month you can join up your month of fabrics & embroider the name of the month across the top or bottom.

This is a fun way to document a year of your life & the diary means that future generations can ‘read’ your quilt & know what Mum/Grandma was doing.

It’s a good idea to draw up each month on interfacing then you can pin each day in place.

Now having said this there are many different styles of Calendar quilts & your vision might be entirely different to mine. I know some people cut strips of fabric & actually sew a new strip on each day.  I’ve added a link to a great blog where a group of quilters have posted details of their progress. One of these styles may be the one for you. The idea of this blog is for us to motivate each other to continue on this journey. The style we choose to use is our own choice, though you are very welcome to use the style I ‘pictured.’

http://calendarquiltchallenge.blogspot.com/

I believe Pat Sloane, an American quilter, had the original  idea for a  ‘calendar quilt’.

Here’s a pic of a block I started in 2006. The 1st was a Sunday so it starts on the first square. This year’s January will start on the sixth square, Friday.’

I will change a few things on this year’s quilt, I won’t use white for the spare squares I think it looks too bland & I will embroidery the month at the top. These squares were 2 1/2″ cut, I’m toying with the idea of cutting 3″ squares this time.  Think about how big you want your finished quilt to be when you decide how big to cut your fabrics.

Don’t think your life has to full of excitement to make one of these. The simplest thing might be the thing that stands out in your day, like a beautiful blue sky or a pretty butterfly you see in your garden. It does make you sit & think about your day whereas often days slide by without much thought. I know that’s been true for me.

So if you would like to be an ‘author’ on this blog you will need to register with wordpress then email me & I will send you an invite to join the group. This is a first for me so I’m hoping it will be easy. :-)

• You’re welcome!!! I’m sure we’ll enjoy the fun of finding just the right fabric.

2. hmm this sounds very interesting indeed…and a wonderful idea…now for me to calculate if I really need to start another project …thinking cap is on,cheers Vickie

• I made the ‘I won’t start anything new’ resolution a few years & it didn’t work. My new resolution is ‘if it sounds like fun give it a go.’ :-)

• If you would like to join us, please send me your email address so I can send an invite. Cheers, Jan

3. So pleased I came across this blog today!
I’ve never played blogs before so be gentle with me :-)
After reading about Calendar quilts on Yahoo I sat down last night and sewed 2 strips together thus beginning my calendar quilt for 2010. Time goes so fast, maybe this will slow it down a tad..if not at least I’ll have something to show for it lol cheers

• Hi Satu, I’m so glad you found us. I’ve sent you an invitation to become an author on our blog.

Cheers, Jan

4. I am a computer dummy and sent a message to what I thought would be this site…I wonder where it went! This looks like a lot of fun and, I’m sure, will brighten up the year. I wonder just how long I will last. 3 squares stitched so far and I am thinking I will go through my stash cutting squares and then find the most suitable for each day as they arrive.

5. What a great idea! Definetely sewing along with you

• Hi Joyce, I’ve sent you an invitation to become one of our authors.
Cheers, Jan

• Thanks Jan, I do actually have a wordpress blog, I just never use it :)

6. Thanks for the invite Jan. I don’t have a blog but have started my quilt for this year. I am getting someone i meet during the course of the day to write their name and date on a homespun triangle. I will add a fabric for the day to make a 3 inch square.

Day 4 today and so far so good. I went to my first step aerobic class for the year so got the instructor to do a pieces and chose black and white as the other fabric as they were the colours she was wearing

• Please register & join our group. We’d love to see pics of your progress. hugs, Jan

7. OMG Prue..what a brilliant idea. I love it…

8. I may borrow your great idea Prue, hope you dont mind. Or should that read “May I” ?

I’m trying to find something relevant in my stash for my strips. I went to the market with my friend Shelle on Saturday. I’ve got plenty of fresh fruit’n'veg fabric but, alas, no shells. And I really thought I had just about a little of everything lol
To think I could of had her sign instead!
cheers
Satu

9. Only one week gone but I am so enjoying this daily challenge. With a life that I thought would be too dull for any sort of interesting quilt I think my week of squares looks pretty good. A bright yellow for a hot sunny day. beautifull floral for the flowers I sent to my sis and stars for the quilt I am currently working on. How simple is that? It looks great and and what fun as well.
Thank you Jan for a great idea
Cheers
Sharyn

• Sorry for the delay. Rowan & I decided to drive down to Melbourne to go house hunting so we packed the car & took off. I’ll have to catch up my squares when I get home. At least I’ll have something interesting to document, including the quilt crawl my friend Lynne & I have planned for Wednesday. :-)
Cheers,
Jan

• Hi Sharyn, i just saw your link on the Quilt Australia forum, I love the maverick stars. Cheers, Jan

10. Well I think I am on here ! LOL I am going to have ago at this and see if I can fit it in with my other projects. Coming in after the beginning of the year I have been thinking back over this past month and can fill in the days to date. I started to do that , cut most of the squares at 2 1/2 ” , sewed some rows then didn’t like it . So I have started recutting at
3 1/2″ for 3″ finished. Only trouble is some of the fabrics I used were just perfect for that day but as I only had a small piece I now have used it up . Boo, hoo LOL I am going to make mine similar to yours Jan. My advice to anyone starting this is to have a good think first before you cut into fabrics that you only have asmall piece of ! LOL

• Hi, I’m glad you have joined us. :-)
I had planned to be a lot more vocal but January has been busy, busy, busy!!! I spent 2 weeks in Melbourne house hunting. Now we are home & sorting through all our stuff to get rid of as much as possible before we move. We’re still looking for the right house & want to be ready to go as soon as we find it. I took my diary with me & made a note each night so I’d remember what happened each day. I had a big cutting session the other day. I plan to have all my squares done by January 31. As soon as I get them done I will post a pic. Please everyone post pics of your fabrics, it will be fun to see how we are all going. I’ve bought a tiny red spot on white fabric to do my sashing.
Cheers, Jan

11. Thank you Jan. How do you post photos on thsi site ?

• Hi, I’ve just added you as an author so you should be able to post on the blog.

12. Oh no ! I re cut all my squares to 3 1/2″ , sewed one row and I think it will be too big ! Now I am going to cut them down to 3″ for 2 1/2 ” finished and I think that should be right. Oh well , at least I can cut them down this time :-) I wonder if I will EVER get this first month sewn LOL . Once i get settled in to the correct size I should be off and running. BTW … I am sewing mine by hand . Is anyone else working on theirs ?

• Oh dear, some projects do have a few teething problems but once you work out the right formula it will go much easier. Yes t’s not so bad when you can trim down rather than have to start again.
I’ve drawn up the final product with all 12 months, with sashing & borders, & it helped me decide what size to go with. I’ll post a picture of what I’ve drawn tomorrow.
Cheers, Jan

13. Well ( self satisifed grin) I’ve seen out the first month lol. I am happy with the size but wish I had more bright or novelty prints. I am just using my stash and being very cryptic with some of the interpretations as to why I have chosen fabric. I am not so thrilled with my chosen background/sashing of black. My quilt is to mark my dgd’s 13th year and I chose black because it has been her colour of choice for some time. I have taken a photo but don’t know how to post it or even if I can????
Cheers
Sharyn

• Well done!!!! I hope to catch up my missing squares today & post a pic. Some days are hard as all I’ve done this past week is move furniture & boxes around the house & garage as we try to get ready to put the house on the market.
Now I’ve set us all up as authors so we all should be able to do a blog post. As you are registered with wordpress you should be able to log into this page. Then at the top on the left it says ‘New Post.’ Click here & you should be able to add your post & pics. Let me know if it doesn’t work & my little computer guru will help me work it out when he gets home from school.
If the black border doesn’t look/feel quite right but you would like it dark how about a purple or electric blue? Wait until you’ve done a couple of months then audition different fabrics & see what grabs you.
Perhaps you could buy some novelty print charm squares to add in the future.
Cheers, Jan

14. But Jan you still haven’t told us HOW to post aphoto !! Do you just copy and paste it into the body of the message window or what ?????
Sharyn I too have finished my first month !! well all but one square and I am waiting for some fabric to come for that. I think all our months would be cryptic to all but ourselves I will give you a ” for instance ” my last week [ stay with me !]
Yellow wavy fabric for a hot windy day…. Reels of cotton fabric for a new stock up of applique threads……Aus flags for Australia Day …. A piece of Bali fabric for a bali quilt that was returned from the quilter ….. A dark grey/black and burgundy rose fabric for my friends husband who died that day , Helicopters for my husband making them in his wooden toy work, and a Scissor fabric because I was cutting out fabrics . I would be interested to see what someone else put in for a one week period . It’s fun !!

• Lol, ok click on ‘New Post’ put in your heading then under that & above the word window it says upload/insert & the first symbol is for pics. Click it & a new window opens. Click on ‘Select Files.’ Navigate your personal files to find & upload your pic. Add your wording in the box, When you have finished your post click on ‘Publish’ on the right hand side of the page. Hopefully your post will appear. :-) )))
Cheers, Jan

15. Oh forgot…. I haven’t decided on a fabric for the beginnings and or endings of the moth as yet. Will have to sit down and do some maths to see how much I would need .

16. Jan I don’t have any of those things on the page I have ? all I have is l” Leave a Response ” and the window to type in at the bottom of the page and at the top there is only ” About ” and ” How To Join ” There is nothing els e. Just this blue page with the posts on it ! If there is another page I should be on can you send me a link to it please ?

17. Oh sorry Jan. I see now . I wasn’t logged on. Did that, then I get these things on top of the page . Do you have problems with this site ?It took me 4 mins to log on and about the same again to get to New Post and it was STILL loading even then. I have ADSL so it isn’t a slow connection with me

• Glad you found it, I just asked dh to log onto ds’s computer to see what he sees as he’s a member too I thought perhaps I was the only one with access!!! I’m new to the group blog world but it seems we’ll work it out together. :-)
It’s usually pretty fast to load. When it’s slow, my computer is usually on a go slow.

18. I too am feeling quit silly – a real computer dumby and I can see nowhere to ‘log on’ All I have is this page with the gorgeous scene at the top. Where is that I wonder???
My fabrics include….beetles which are much more attractive than the nits I found in Jazz’s hair lol. Shells for the souveniers brought home from holiday. Large gold stars for the character Jazz showed when she found money in the street and took it to the police Station. A house for the day Jazz’s friend came home from holidays – and I barely saw her again for the rest of the holidays lol. Today will have a scrap from when I took up the school uniform….back to school. Or should I make it flowers for the bouquet just delivered by the florist???Now I’m off to browse ebay and try to get some fabrics.
Cheers
Sharyn

19. Roflol, I love the beetles!!!!! This is where the fun comes in.
Ok to log in, you’re on the first page with the pretty pic, it looks like somewhere in the UK to me. Scroll down & on the right side under all the post links there is a heading META under that it says ‘log in,’ click here & follow the prompts. When you’re logged in, you’ll get the tool bar at the very top left with My Account, My Dashboard, New Post etc. Click on new Post & add your pics & story.
Cheers, Jan

20. Well now isn’t this strange ! I don’t have ANY page with a pretty picture !! I have a plain blue page that has Jans January block towards the top . On the right hand side from the top there is a calendar , visitors count, the Calendar Girls names, a list of recent comments then under that I have the Meta thing. You really have to look for it. Why don’t we all have the same page ? Sometimes I have little quilt blocks next to each comment, other times not. Today I do’t….just a very plain blue page with small writing on it . The same when I log in I don’t always get the same looking log in page ???? Weeird !!

• Now that is strange I always have the pretty pic at the top, though I think the quilt blocks come & go. Yes the log on thing is well hidden, I couldn’t find it the first time so Rowan stepped in & showed me. On my other blog http://mollys-meanderings.blogspot.com/ it’s right at the top, very obvious. I guess we’ll get used to it all as we go along.
I’m so looking forward to seeing posts & pics from you all!!!!!!!!!!
Cheers, Jan

21. Sharyn , don’t forget to look on oztion also. They have lots of fat quarters as well as ebay . Don’t get your hopes up though …..I think I have bought them all !!! LOL LOL

22.

• I checked out your link, the squares look great. I’m sure there are some interesting stories behind them. Cheers, Jan

23. I would love to continue being a member of this site but I don’t think I will. It is such a poor site , nothing will work on it for me . I tried to upload a photo but that wasn’t to be either. None of the pages will load properly . Maybe others are having all the problems I am and that is why no one is posting ? I am very used to using forums and putting pics on but have never come on one like this ! A Yahoo group would be so easier LOL I will look in on occasion but afraid that will be it . Sorry !

• Hi, I’m sorry to hear this. Please everyone speak up, are you having problems??? Would you prefer to change this to a yahoo group? I’m easy, I don’t mind. I want this to work so we need to work it out to suit all of us. Would you like me to set up a Yahoo group, see if it works for us then maybe let this one go? Feedback please. :-) ))
Cheers, Jan

• What ‘system’ are you using to view the site? I use Google Chrome, Explorer & Firefox. I find that some things won’t work on one but will work on others. It might be a factor. Cheers, Jan.

24. Sorry about this Jan, but it is just so frustrating to have a site refuse to do anything it should !! I use Firefox but have also Explorer and have tried it there where the pages look a little different but I still have the same bad results . What is Google Chrome ? is that an internet browser too?

• Yes Google Chrome is another browser. I’ve gone ahead & set up a yahoo group for us so please join & we’ll see how we go. I understand your frustration I’m no computer guru I’m always grabbing ds to help. I do belong to a couple of Yahoo groups & they work smoothly so it’s probably best we go that way. I chose to try a blog because I saw another calendar group run this way & it ‘looked’ good, lol. Thanks so much for pointing out the shortcomings, hopefully once we get our teething problems out of the way we can sit back & enjoy. Also with a Yahoo group we can chat easier & perhaps organise some charm swaps. Posting on a blog does seem a bit ‘formal’ rather than just chatting through email. Here’s the link:
http://groups.yahoo.com/search?query=calendar+quilt+girls
Fingers crossed it works. :-) )) Cheers, Jan

• I’m just off out the door to pick up ds, have a blood test & buy some gluten free food for ds. The Dr suggested a gf diet for a few months. I’ve been on it for 25 years so i’ll know what to buy. I’ll check back when I get back to see how things are going. Cheers, Jan

25. So that link finally came up ???? it wasn’t there before and normally that would bring up a photo not just the link . But I couldn’t get anywhere on the new post page where you are supposed to be able to post an image .

26. Aaaaaaargh ! That link that is showing in the messages above will not show me anything ! how did you get to see a photo from it. ?

27. http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/jj14/mousiehousie/000_1657.jpg?t=1265860428

Now this link should work. Anyone who would like to see my January block copy and paste this .

• The link works, it didn’t before I used the link that came in the email sent to tell me there was a message.

28. I have joined the Yahoo group Jan., opened an album and posted my pic ! I hope the other girls see your message and join in. Perhaps a message on SCQuilters would help also .

• Oh good!!!! Yes I’ll email my quilt groups QDU & Scq. commercial & I’ll mention it on my original personal blog. I will email the others today to make sure everyone knows. Thanks so much for letting me know your frustrations rather than just letting it go, that would be a shame.
Cheers, Jan
